Kielsterdiep
The Kielsterdiep or Kieldiep is a channel Dutch in the province of Groningue.
Geography
Kielsterdiep leaves the Winschoterdiep to Hoogeveen towards the south then towards the south-south-east. It crosses the village-channel of Kiel-Windeweer to join the Grevelingskanaal with Annerveenschekanaal. Its length is approximately 11 kilometers.
History
Kielsterdiep was dug starting from 1647 on the initiative of the town of Groningue, in order to clear the Marais and the Tourbière S in the east of Kropswolde. Towards 1738, the channel before reached Boven-Kiel. The city wanted to make prolong Kielsterdiep until Bareveld, in order to carry out the optimal route to join the Stadskanaal. Several landowners of Bareveld being against, the council of the city chose a connection with the Grevelingskanaal, which also made it possible to join the Stadskanaal.Along the channel was born the village from Kiel-Windeweer, a length Village-street established on the two sides of the channel. After the end of the transport of the Peat, the channel was used for the transport of the agricultural products , raw materials for the factories of Farine of Potato and paperboard of Paille, many in the area. In 1973, the last boat borrowed Kielsterdiep. The channel was closed with navigation, and some bridges were replaced by stoppings.
Reopening
In 2005 one began work to carry out the reopening of Kielsterdiep. The stoppings are removed: one builds new Pont S and lock S. Some existing bridges were repaired or restored. Starting from 2008, Kielsterdiep will be integrated in a new route of pleasure between the lake Zuidlaardermeer and is province of Groningue.
