In the Judaism, the kiddouch (or qiddouch ) (Héb.: קידוש, litt. “sanctification”, i.e. separation, transcendence) is a short blessing pronounced on a cut of kasher Vin or Grape juice Cacher at the time of the Chabbat or a feastday.

The kiddouch is the realization of the positive Mitzvah “Remember the day of the chabbat in order to sanctify it” (" זכוראתיוםהשבתלקדשו " , Zakhor ett-yom haChabbat lèkaddsho , mitzvah #91 according to the comput of Maïmonide), the " souvenir" in front of being made by means of the vin.
Selon the Halakha, if there is no wine, the kiddouch can be done on bread, or any alcoholic drink (cachère), like Bière.

There is, at the time of each chabbat or feastday two kiddouchim: at the time of the meal of these day day before, and at the time of the meal of the morning. The first kiddouch is of origin biblical, second was instituted by the Wise ones of the Grande Parliament.
Le kiddouch must be carried out before the “séouda'” (meal, feast). A man - generally the father, the officiant, or the most important man of the assistance - takes wine glass in his hand, and says the kiddouch so that the assistance hears it. It is usual that each one drinks with the cut, but there is no obligation with that.

Kiddouch is usually not recited at the time of the third meal of Chabbat (“  Séouda chlichit  ”), although Maïmonide estimated that it had to be done.
Certains follows this opinion, in particular the 'Hassidim. In order to differentiate the “kiddouch “hova”” (kiddouch by having) from the “kiddouch Minhag” (kiddouch by habit), they make it in the middle of the meal, and not at the beginning.

General principles of the ritual

In order to honor the mitzvah with the kiddouch, an elegant silver goblet is often used. This container must be able to contain at least a revi' it of liquid (about 150 millilitres). The major part of the wine or grape juice should be drunk by that which recites the kiddouch , or another assistant. The remainder should be divided by the remainder of the assistance which is made pass the cut while trying not to empty it before the last did not drink any (but, once again, they are habits).

Before reciting the blessings, the 'Hallah, which will be next the mets consumed in the honor of the holy day, must be covered by a fabric: indeed, from a point of view halakhic, the blessing on the bread has precedence of the blessing of the wine; however, in order to begin the meal with the “kiddouch”, the 'hallah must be hidden in order to it “withdraw” table.
Certains sees an allegory of the attention there to be expressed with its next: one cannot remove honor with the bread while concentrating on the wine as long as the bread “looks at”.

For the kiddouch of the “morning” (actually, as it takes place after the prayer of the morning, it is not generally done before midday), one can recite it, even in the absence of intention to sit down for a true meal. In this case, a cake is used as food to be made pass instead of the bread (from a strictly biblical point of view, bread and cake have the same statute). The cake must also be to him covered at the time of the blessing on the wine.

When the kiddouch is recited on the 'hallah (because there is neither wine, neither grape juice, nor alcoholic drink available), one substitutes the blessing on the bread for the blessing on the wine, and one lava the hands before to recite the kiddouch and not afterwards.
Certaines congregations does it routinièrement, even in the presence of wine.

Kiddouch of the day before Chabbat and the three festivals

It is about the principal kiddouch, and its significance relates to all Chabbat or feastday. The central prayer is that of the sanctification of the day (Héb. קדושתהיום kedouchat hayom ), where the faithful one affirms to distinguish it from the other days, in remembering the creation of the world (Chabbat) and/or the Sortie Egypt (feastday).
La conclusion of the blessing of Chabbat is Baroukh ATA Teenager-naï, mèkadech hachabbat (Blessed you are Eternel, which sanctify Chabbat); that of the feastdays is Baroukh ATA Teenager-naï, mèkadech Israel vèhazmanim (Blessed you are, Etrenel, which sanctify Israel and the periods).
Avant the sanctification of the day, one reads some verses of the Torah and the blessing on the wine (or on the bread, or any allowed alcoholic drink).
Lors of the feastdays, one adds after the sanctification of the day the blessing Chèhè' hiyanou .

Kiddouch of the morning of Chabbat and the three festivals

Although the kiddouch of the day before of Chabbat or one feastday covers the entirety its length, the Wise ones issued a kiddouch in day, in order to point out once more the holiness of the jour.
Le kiddouch is composed in the beginning only of one blessing on the wine, but there is habit to make him precede by the biblical verses dealing with the holiness of the jour.
Ce kiddouch is called in Araméen Kiddoucha rabba (קידושארבא), the " Large kiddouch" by a rather frequent turning in Araméen to name the things by their opposite when they could prove to be unpleasant.
