Kiai

Kiai is a term Japanese, used in the Budo . It is composed of the Kanji

  • , which is read “ ki ”, and indicates energy interns, the heart, the spirit, the will… to see the article IQ (spirituality) ;
  • , which is read “ have ” (contraction of “ awasu ”), to join together.

Sometimes considering wrongly like the “cry which kills” out of the karate experts, it is about a “extension of the ki ”, externalization of a “cry interns”, of breath-energy (kokyu-ryokyu) in a cut, a martial movement. It is the concentration of all the energy of the practitioner in only one movement.

The kiai is a particular cry: the air is blocked on the level of the throat or the Glotte by the contraction of the Muscle S. Anatomiquement, this movement, if it is well controlled, can cause the simultaneous contraction of the majority of the muscles of the Torse and the Abdomen, which can deaden the blows received by the practitioner.

As an offensive, the effects of the kiai are legendary. Thus Miyamoto Musashi would have killed a scorpion by pushing an inaudible cry, making fall the animal died in front of its adversary, which, impressed, escaped. Some have advanced that a sound correctly product can cause the setting in Résonance of a body, until its rupture, from where the “cry which kills”; it is however largely about an attempt at rationalization of a fact often brought back but ever established.

Control of the kiai , the kiaijutsu , request a good knowledge and a good control of the Breathing apparatus and muscles of the abdomen. The kiaijutsu thus develops the force, the duration and the control of the Respiration. The concept, Japan board, comes however from China, where the monks of the Monastère of the hill Shaolin use a similar cry for the exercise of IQ gong. One also finds this technique in martial arts Korea NS ( yatz or kihap ), Vietnamese and inhabitant of Thailand.

As one often hears it at a great number of beginners, the " kiai" " is marked; kiaï" … But there is no really precise word to say it.
