The Khorassan (خراسان in Farsi, also spelled Khorasan , Chorasan or Khurasan ) is an area located in the North-East of the Iran. The name comes from Persan and means " from which the soleil" comes; . It was given to the oriental party of the empire Sassanide.

Geography

Khorassan was the largest province of Iran until the September 29th 2004 where it was separate in three areas:

  • the septentrional Khorassan, capital: Bojnourd, other counties: Shirvan, Jajarm, Maneh, Samlaghan and Esfrayen.
  • the southernmost Khorassan, capital: Birjand, other counties: Nahbandan, Sarbisheh
  • the Khorasan-e-razavi, capital: Mashhad, other counties: Ghouchan, Dargaz, Chenaran, Sarakhs, Fariman, Torbat-e Jam, Taybad, Ferdows, Ghayen, Khaf and Rashtkhar, Kashmar, Bardaskan, Neyshabour, Sabzevar, Gonabad, Kalat and Khalil Abad

The old province Perse of Khorassan included territories located today in Iran, Afghanistan, Tadjikistan, Turkménistan and in Ouzbékistan. Several of the historical main cities of Persia are located in old Khorassan: Nishapur (today in Iran), Merv and Sanjan (today in Turkménistan), Samarkand and Bukhara (today in Ouzbékistan), Herat and Balkh (today in Afghanistan).

The ethnic independent groups are the Persan ones, Kurdish, Turkish says Khorassanis exits of the tribes oghouzes installed in the area, Turkmènes and the Arabs whose installation is old since it goes back to the first times of the empire abasside. There exists also an important Afghan community due to the surge of Afghan refugees these last years.

The heart of Khorassan is today in Afghanistan. The famous and historical cities are called Omolblades (=la mother of the cities of the world): Samarkand, Bokhara, Khazni, Hérat, Ghore, Orozgan, Parwan, Kapisa, Samangan, Zabul, Kabul etc…

The famous Poets of Khorasan are: Ansory, Rodaky, Daqiqi, Abu-Ali Sinnah etc…

Economy

Khorassan is famous for its famous carpets and the culture of the saffron in the south of the province.

Personalities

The poet Abbas Ibn Al-Ahnaf is resulting from an Arab family established in Khorassan.
