Kherson

Kherson (in Cyrillic Херсон ) is a city of the south of the Ukraine, capital of the Oblast de Kherson. In 2004, one counted 303.900 inhabitants. It is an important port of the Black Sea and Dniepr, but also the seat of large factories of naval construction.

History

Kherson was founded in 1778 by Grigori Potemkine which thus carried out the orders of the empress Catherine II of Russia. The city was built on the place of a small fortress, Aleksandr-Songs. The city draws its name from the tauric Chersonèse, name ancient of the close Crimea.
