Khamtay Siphandone

Biography

He was born in the February 8th 1924, in the province of Champasak, on the island of Gives Khone, in the district which bears its name (" today; If Phan Gift " mean “four thousand islands” in lao).

In 1947, it engages in the nationalist guerilla against the French colonial authorities. In 1954, the Laos obtains its independence after the Accords of Geneva, and Khamtay Siphandone becomes member of the Indochinese Communist party, then revolutionary Popular party lao (PR, or Pathet Lao). It is in charge of propaganda and of radio operator of Pathet Lao in 1959 and 1960 it becomes responsible for the military businesses of the central committee of Pathet Lao.

The Khamtay general between Politburo of the Party to its congress of 1972. Of 1975 with 1991, he is Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Defense and ordering as a supreme leader of the popular army of the Laos. In 1991, it reaches the post of Prime Minister and becomes in 1992 president of the Central committee of the Pathet Lao following the death of Kaysone Phomvihane.

He was elected on February 24th, 1998 chair of the popular Democratic republic of the Laos by the National Assembly.
