The Seattle Center Coliseum was inaugurated in 1962 for the World Fair Century 21 Exposure being held to Seattle. The June 16th 1994, the room was entirely rebuilt in order to be more roomy and appropriate to NBA, work finished the October 26th 1995. During the rebuilding, the original lines of the roof of the building were employed like a guide and as part of the original concrete for the principal supports which always exists but the majority of the remainder of the arena are new. The ground which was at the origin on the level of the street is now 10 meters lower to leave more places in order to increase the capacity of the room.

After the rebuilding, the Coliseum was famous KeyArena , because the Key Bank bought the rights of name for $15,1 million USD over 15 years. The cost of the restoration of 1994 cost $74,5 million USD the town of Seattle, $20 million (estimate) in SuperSonics, between $15 and $25 million (estimate) with the economies of the building. The total costs of the project are estimated between $109.5 and $119.5 million, which includes the demolition of the existing building, the development of new, and the costs of financing. It is the first arena publicly financed and fully approved by the gained income of the building. The first match of regular season of the Seattle Supersonics played in the KeyArena took place the November 4th 1995, against Los Angeles Lakers.

During several seasons between 1980 and 1985, the Sonics used the Kingdome as a principal arena in residence, in addition to the Seattle Center Coliseum . This mainly occurred during the matches of playoff and other matches with multitudes exceeding the capacity of the old man Seattle Center Coliseum and its 14.000 places. The " Coliseum" was also a site of polemic. The January 5th 1986, a match between the Seattle Supersonics and the Phoenix Suns was suspended because of the rain falling into the arena. The March 5th 1972, Spencer Haywood was wounded with the knee after having slipped into a water puddle pool on the ground because of the permeable roof. It continued the town of Seattle and NBA then gathered $55 000 USD.

In 2004, plans of expansion propose to increase the KeyArena with almost twice its current dimension to adapt to new restaurants, stores and a training ground (the cost is estimated $220 million USD).
