Kermadec islands

The islands Kermadec form a Archipel in the Pacific Ocean Southern. They administratively form part of the New Zealand since 1887. From a geological point of view, they belong to the underwater dorsal which connects the Zealand news to the Tonga. They owe their name to the captain of French navy Jean-Michel Huon de Kermadec which explored the area with its boat " Espérance" in 1791 in the search of Perugia

Geography

The archipelago is located between 29° and 31,5° southern latitude and 178° and 179° of western longitude, 800 to 1000 kilometers in the North-East of the island of North of the New Zealand and at an about equivalent distance from the Tonga. The center of the archipelago is located roughly at 29° 15 ′ 28 ″ S and 177° 54 ′ 28 ″ O.

The archipelago includes/understands four principal islands:

  • the island Raoul located at 29° 15 ′ 60 ″ S and 177° 55 ′ 10 ″ O is largest by far of the islands of the archipelago with a surface of 29.38 km2 and a culminating point the peak Moumoukai with 516 meters of altitude, it is surrounded by many small small islands;
  • the island Macauley located at 30° 14 ′ S and 178° 26 ′ O and at 110 kilometers in the south-south-east of the Raoul island is the second island by the size, a surface of 3.06 km2 and its culminating point, the Haszard mount, has an altitude of 238 meters;
  • the island Curtis located at 30° 32 ′ 32 ″ S and 178° 33 ′ 39 ″ O and at 35 kilometers in the south-south-east of the Macauley island is the third by the size, has a surface of 0.59 km2 and a culminating point with 130 meters of altitude;
  • the small island Hope located at 31° 26 ′ S and 178° 54 ′ O and at 80 kilometers in the south-south-east of Curtis island has a diameter of 250 meters, a surface of 0.05 km2 and a culminating point with 70 meters of altitude.

One can also quote some small small islands like:

  • the McDonald small island located at 30° 09 ′ S and 178° 22 ′ O and at ten kilometers in the north of the Macauley island;
  • the Haszard island located near the Macauley island;
  • the small island Harbor located at eight kilometers with the west-north-west of the small island the Hope which is apparent only with low tide.

Climate

The climate is subtropical with an average of the Température S of 22,4°C in February and 16°C in August. The annual Précipitation S reach: 1500 millimetres with a Saison dries from October at January.

Population and infrastructure

The whole of the archipelago is uninhabited apart from a weather station and radiophonic which since 1937 is located at the north of the Raoul island and functions with some civils servant and voluntary New Zealand. It is the point of population more in north of all New Zealand.
