Kerbogha

Kerbogha (in Arab: كربغا , in Turkish: Kürboğa ) was the Atabey of Mosul. It was a war leader who enjoyed a great fame but it had to undergo a cuisante demolished at the time of the first Croisade. In 1098, after having learned the seat from Antioche by the crusaders, it gathered its troops and went on the city. Before its arrival, the June 7th, the crusaders had already taken possession of the city for four days.

Whereas the crusaders found themselves besieged in their turn, inside the city, Pierre Barthélémy (or Pierre the Hermit) claimed, thanks to a vision and the revelation of holy André, to have discovered the Sainte Lance. This discovery gave again courage with the Christian army. At the same time, the arguments and of the engagements burst between the various Moslem factions. Atabeg decided to attack by surprised Bohémond de Tarente and its army.

During the seat, Pierre the Hermit was sent like emissary by the Christian princes in order to meet Kerbogha to propose an agreement between the parts. Kerbogha, which thought of having the top, refused the proposal. Indeed, it had been informed that the Christian army weak and was disorganized. Instead of that, it was confronted with a justified and unified Christian army whereas his was divided. After the defeat, it had to beat a retreat and to return to Mosul.

A French chronicler of the crusades transcribed his name Corbaran .
