Kensington (Philadelphia)

Kensington is a district of the town of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. It is located at the North-East of the downtown area.

Before the arrival of Europeans, the Amerindians Lenapes had a village named Shackamaxon which was located at the current site of the district of Kensington, in the north of the center of Philadelphia.

At the XIXe century, the district was populated by Irish, German and Polish immigrants. It is at that time that textile industry, in particular the clothes industry of carpet, was most flourishing. Kensington was the theater of the riots anti-catholics from May-June 1844.
