Keli Yakar

Keli Yakar (" Container précieux") is the most famous work and the pen name of Solomon Ephraim de Luntschitz (1550 - 1619), Rabbin, poet, preacher and biblical commentator.

He is famous for his sermons and homélies, in which he forgot anything nor nobody. He rudoyait the rich person for their lack of generosity, criticizing their claims to rather evaluate the religious statute according to financial means than of the acts, and at the same time, showed the poor to take pleasure in charity without doing enough efforts to leave itself there. Its sermons were gathered in several works ( Ir Giborim , Revivot Efrayim , etc). Its name comes from what remains however its philosopher's stone, its biblical comment, included in many standard editions of the Tanakh.

Biography

It was born with Lenczyk (Luntschitz) and studied at Rav Solomon Luria, the Maharshal , with Lublin. It was used then as Rosh yeshiva (senior) with the Yeshiva of Lviv (Lemberg). In 1604, it was elected rabbi of Prague, a position which it assumed until his death. In its introduction to the Keli Yakar , he explains why the name Ephraim was added to its name at the time of a grave disease, a practical widespread in the Judaism.
