Kelantan

The Kelantan (Jawi: كلنتن) is a state of Malaysia located at the extreme North-East of the country to the borders with the Thailand. It is bordered in north by the China Sea southernmost and by the states of the Perak in the west, the Pahang in the south and the Terengganu in south-east.

Kelantan is regarded as the cradle of the Malayan culture and its rural and traditional character reinforces the impression of bastion of the Malayan identity in the country.

History

The name of Kelantan is attested as of XIVe century after J. - C. the Nagarakertagama , a poem epic writes in 1365 in the kingdom java are born from Majapahit, mentions " Kalanten" among some hundred " regions tributaires" kingdom. Actually, the territory controlled by Majapahit did not extend that on part of the east and center of Java. " regions tributaires" were in fact of the counters forming a sales network whose Majapahit was the center. Majapahit sent to it dignitaries of which the role was to make sure that these counters were not devoted to a private trade which would escape the kingdom.

Kelantan was an independent sultanate until the 18th century. It was managed then by the Terengganu. But this bond of vassalage was called into question by a revolt which was placed under the protection of the Siamese sovereigns. The suzerainty of the Siam continued until 1909. The English took the control of the state and incorporated it in the colony of Malaya. During the Second world war, Kelantan been used as point of unloading of the Japanese army in its conquest of the Malayan peninsula (December 8th, 1941). This one was completed with the rendering of Singapore.

One finds in Kelantan the shape of shadow theater, the wayang kulit Kelantan (also called wayang Siam ).

Governorship

Rural and traditional company, little touched by the urban and technological development of the West of Malaysia, Kelantan has the appearance of a bastion of the traditional values. These characteristics are expressed on the political scene with the domination of the STEP (Islamic party of Malaysia) since 1990. It is the only state not controlled by the coaltion with the capacity (Barisan Nasional).
