Keflavík
Keflavík is a port city in Iceland which is to approximately 50 km in the south-west of Reykjavík. With the villages Njarðvík and Hafnir , Keflavík forms the municipality Reykjanesbær which counts 11 346 inhabitants. The city thus forms the greatest municipality of the peninsula Reykjanes.
Its geographical coordinates are 64°01 ′ NR 22°34 ′ O.
It is mentioned for the first time at the 13th century like commercial city. It became then a center of fishing.
With the port and the international airport “Leifur Erikson”, American air base , of a surface of 100km ², and which accommodated during the Cold war approximately 1900 soldiers, provides employment. Indeed, Iceland does not have national army. A bilateral agreement of 1951 provides that the defense of the Icelandic territory will be spring of the American Armée. The military presence in Iceland names officially Iceland Defense Forces.
For the little story, it is necessary to wait the year 1963 so that an American soldier of black skin is authorized to put the feet in Iceland…
However, on August 11th, 2006, the four F-15 present on the island (there were of them 37 more in 1990) left the latter and on September 30th, 2006, the base was closed.
