The keep of Pons is with Pons in Charente-Maritime and it is visible by far.

history

  • builds on the site of a oppidum, the castle of Pons one of most important place-strong medieval because was located at a railway crossing and road of the pilgrims of Saint-Jacob.
  • the castrum of Pons belonged to the lord d' Aulnay, with the dukes of Aquitaine then to the lords de Pons
  • destroys by Richard Lion-hearted in 1179, the current keep is built in 1187
  • after the seat of 1621 the marshal of Albret made there do important work
  • it is bought in 1806 by the municipality which installed the town hall in the remaining main building
  • it was classified in 1879

structure

  • it is more the good example of keep Romance palate of the west of France.
  • its walls are 2,5 meters and 4,40 meters thickness. Of a 30 meters height it has a base of 25,8 out of 14,4 meters. The interior comprised three levels.
  • in 1904 Emile Combes made add a crenellation on the liver of an engraving which represented the keep of Tonnay-Buttons! And to pay work a chimney sold which is now with the Château of Usson.
  • the remaining main building modest with a stage, a roof of bored slate of attic windows with pediment is rounded, arcades and the traces of other buildings

garden of the castle of Pons

  • in 1665 on the ground released by work, the marshal of Albret makes draw a Jardin with the Frenchwoman and plant a hedge. A watercolour of 1714 watch the squares of the pareterres cut in diagonal by alleys
  • there was also a garden at the top of the Donjon.
  • the garden is connected to the valley by a staircase on six levels, cut in old the ramparts
  • the garden was altered towards 1860, with addition of a large basin.
