Keeler de rubíes

Pierrette is a Romance of Honore de Balzac, published in 1840. It belongs to the human Comedy and is located in the part Études of manners , in the second book of the Scènes of the life of province and the subset entitled the Single people . Its first publication goes back to January 1840 in the form of a serial in the newspaper the Century then the book appears in September 1840.

Balzac dedicated this novel with Ewelina Hańska which he will marry in 1850.

Synopsis

The action is during the reign of Charles X (1824-1830).

Pierrette Lorrain is an orphan young person, entrusted by his grandparent ruined to his/her cousins Rogron, two single people imbeciles. She will be the innocent victim of handling of the characters trying to recover the fortune of Rogron.

By this novel, Balzac wants to show the devastations and stupidities of the celibacy. It also shows finger “ the old maids and the old boys, these bumblebees of the hive ”, null and unproductive.
