Kazuo Shiraga
Kazuo Shiraga (白髪一雄) (born in 1924, with Amagasaki, in the Prefecture of Hyogo) is a contemporary Japanese artist.
Biography
Kazuo Shiraga studies at the school of Beautiful arts of Kyōto then to that of Ōsaka until in 1949. In 1950 he is the pupil of Tsuguo Itoh and takes part starting from 1952 in a group “Zero-kai” with Saburô Murakami, Akira Kanayama, Atsuko Tanaka.
As of its foundation it adheres to the movement avant-garde Gutaï and takes part in ls first exposure of the group to Tōkyō in 1955.
It practices painting with the feet, or hung upright with a cord. It also practices simulations of combat in mud to leave the print of its body there.
Starting from 1968, it teaches painting with Ōsaka, initiating its pupils with contemporary Western art.
It enters in 1971 to the Buddhist monastery of the Temple Enryaku on the Mont Hiei, under the Buddhist name of Sodo Shiraga .
