Kayser qualities
Qualities Kayser , born the March 29th 1877 with Lupstein in Alsace (then in the German Empire) and dead the October 21st 1944 on the island of Tarik in the islands Truk (then under Japanese mandate), was a catholic missionary German installed with Nauru.
Biography
Alois Kayser was born on March 29th, 1877 in Lupstein, a small village of Alsace forming part at the time of the German Empire.
Missions in Nauru
In 1904, Alois Kayser is sent as catholic missionary on Nauru by Germany in order to take again the work started by Friedrich Gruendl. It settles at the village of Ibwenape in current the district of Meneng and then has the role of évangéliser the population in competition with the missionary protesting Philip Delaporte. Parallel to its religious activities, he studies the Nauruan and publishes a German Dictionnaire nauruan/and a Grammaire nauruane.At the conclusion of the First World War, the German colonization of Nauru ends and Alois Kayser is expelled by it. He manages nevertheless to return there in 1921 in an individual way with a Passeport French. In 1928, it officially receives on behalf of the Australian Père Thomas J.O' Brien a mission of the Missionnaires of the Sacred Heart. In 1936, it allows the installation of sisters on the island.
Deportation
In 1943, it is off-set by the Japanese, which occupy Nauru then, on the islands Truk in the islands Carolines with a good part of the population nauruane. It dies there the October 21st 1944.The Kayser College of Nauru located in the district Ewa pays homage to him while bearing its name.
