Katowice
Katowice (to be pronounced “Katovitsè”) is it tenth plus big city of Poland as well as the chief town of the Voïvodie of Silesia. The city is one of the principal industrial centers of Poland and is also the most important city of the Industrial Park of High-Silesia, a Mégalopole cash 3.487.000 inhabitants (2001).
Located on the Kłodnica and Rawa, the city was known in the past under the name of Kątowicze , German " Kattowitz" and then briefly after the death of Joseph Stalin, Stalinogród (1953-1956).
History and economy
The area of Katowice was inhabited by Silesian since the very first centuries. First of all directed by the dynasty of the Piast, it fell under the cut from the Habsbourg after the extinction from the line from the Silesian dukes.
The village itself was founded at the 19th century, one period during which the area belonged to the Royaume of Prussia, and gained the statute of city in 1865.
Mainly inhabited by Germans, Silesians, of the Poles, comprising a big part of population of Jewish religion, Katowice became Polish under between 1918 and 1921.
The city thrived and developed thanks to its great mining resources (mainly the coal) present in the mountainous solid masses neighborhood. Katowice' S Rynek - is the old center and marketplace off the city. Unfortunately many old buildings were demolished in the 1950s to make place for communist modern buildings. Today the communist designs are considered ugly by right wing politics and there were plans to demolish them and build has new center.
