The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven to leave of space or KUL, in catholic French University of Leuwen ) is a Dutch-speaking Université Belgian, whose seat is with Leuwen. It is the oldest university of language Dutchwoman and the oldest still existing catholic university. At its head, since August 2005, is the vice-chancellor Marc Vervenne who also forms part of the management committee. The president is the cardinal Godfried Danneels who, in this function, carries the title of chancellor. The current university is resulting from the scission in 1968 of the catholic Université of Leuwen in an entirely Dutch-speaking section and an entirely French-speaking section.

The employers' festival of the university takes place on February 2nd, i.e. with the Chandeleur. Each year this day, the university gives its titles of doctor honoris causa . The seal of the university shows the virgin sitting as a Sedes Sapientiae .

During the academic year 2005-2006, 30.545 students were registered in K.U.Leuven and divided themselves between 14 faculties. K.U.Leuven offers 62 basic academic formations and 104 continuing educations. K.U.Leuven is member of the Groupe of Coïmbre and the European Ligue of the universities of research.

The king of the Belgians Albert II and his oldest son, prince Philippe, are doctor honoris causa of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Name

A certain confusion can reign on the name of this institution. Before the scission, the university is called in French catholic Université of Leuwen (UCL) and in Dutch Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL).

In 2007, the university is likely to lose its catholic accreditation because it continues the research not sanctioned by the Church in Therapeutic cloning.
