Kathok

the monastery of Kathok, second important institution after that of Samye, was founds in 1159 by the Master Nyingmapa Kadampa Déshek (1122 - 1192). The foundation of the monastery thus marked the final revival of the school after the persecution of Buddhism by King Langdarma.

It could be beside the monastery of Samye one of the oldest monasteries Tibetans still known. Shortly after its foundation, the large Master Dzogchen Vairocana visited the monastery of Kathok where it made build a Stupa. The fifth owner of the throne of Kathok made build many other monasteries and extended the tradition.
