Katherine

Katherine (: 8437 inhabitants) is the third city in term of population of the Territoire of North in Australia. It is located at 320 km in the south-east of Darwin, the capital, with 1185 kilometers in the north of Alice Springs. The river of the same name crosses the city. Since February 4th, 2004 with the startup of the way of railroad between Darwin and Adélaïde, it is the only stop of the Ghan, the train which crosses Australia of north to the south between Darwin and Alice Springs.

The city must its name with the first name of the second girl of one of the sponsors (James Chambers) of John McDouall Stuart the first European have visited the area on July 4th, 1862.

Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was inhabited by the aboriginals Jawoyn, Dagoman and Wardaman.

While waiting for the development of agriculture in the area and because of the reduction in the mining activity with the closing of the gold mine of the Todd Mount, Katherine saw mainly tourism and activity of a military base of the Australian air forces installed with 17 kilometers in the south-east of the city.

The city which has a subtropical climate is victim regularly of floods in rain season in particular into 1957,1974,1998 and the 2006. level of the river which can go up of more than 20 meters.

The city is near the " National Nitmiluk Park" who shelters the throats of the Katherine river and the falls " Edith Falls".
