Kasina
Kasina (Faded), means " Globalité". This term describes in fact one of the practices of Samatha bhavana, the development of peace, otherwise that of the two Buddhist meditations similar to the Rajah Yoga.
This practice consisting in concentrating, globality is initially a material object to which meditating all its attention relates.
Signs
The first sign is the object which will have prepared contemplating it before meditating. If all the practices do not seem any more to take place nowadays, certain globalities at least are still practiced. Indeed, the traditional texts theravadin, like the Tipitaka or the Visuddhimagga, mention ten different globalities: ; Ground: Meditating gathers a ground cluster in makes a circle of it. He contemplates then this circle. ; Water: Meditating fills a container with water, or considers a pond, lake,… ; Fire: It is a question of preparing a fire and of contemplating the flames. ; Wind: Originality of this globality and that contemplating it will not use the sight systematically - for example by contemplating the movement of sheets of a tree -, but which it could be attentive with the feeling of touching induced by the wind. ; Red and white yellow blue: As for the colors, contemplating it makes use of a coloured circle. ; Light: It is a question of considering a ray of light, for example through a hole in a wall. ; Space delimited: The name assigned with this globality distinguishes it from the object infinite Espace characteristic of the first Arupajhana. It is simply about an opening, for example in a skin, contemplating it contemplating this space.
Sign learned
The object or perception described here corresponds to the whole beginning of the practice. Meditating will end up retaining, to remember this perception, and to be able to remind it. This memory will be then the new object of the practice and is named learned sign .
Considered sign
But, progressively of the practice, this memory can evolve/move, and contemplating it will be prone to sharp impressions, even of the hallucinations. The mental image which was used to him to concentrate evolves/moves and it is called then considered sign , the moment of his appearance being associated to him with développment of the Concentration of proximity.
Substance
Traditionally, such meditations are seen of course like a work of concentration, but also like the comprehension of the elements which can lead to obtaining magic capacities.
