Karl Shepherd

Karl Berger (born the March 30th 1935 with Heidelberg) is a vibraphonist and pianist of German Jazz. It was until in 2003 professor at the University of music and representational arts (" Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst") of Francfort-sur-le-Main. It directed then until 2005 the department music of the Université of Massachusetts to Dartmouth.

In 1968 it founded with Cherry the New York Total Music Company and in 1971 with Ornette Coleman the Creative Music Foundation . In 1973 it directed with his Ingrid wife to Woodstock the Creative Music Studio in which, inter alia John Cage, Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Richard Teitelbaum and George Rusell taught and formed of the large ochestres with their students. Shepherd was interested very early in the World music.

Karl Berger is married with the singer Ingrid Sertso with whom it occurs regularly in duet and four-bit byte. With Albert Mangelsdorff, Gunter Hampel and Peter Brötzmann, it belongs to the first generation of the Free jazz of West Germany.
