Karl Lueger

Karl Lueger (born the October 24th 1844 - died the March 10th 1910 was an Austrian political personality 19th century, which was mayor of Vienna of 1897 until its death in 1910.

Biography

Karl Lueger was born in Vienna where his/her father is guard of the Institute of Technology. It made studies of right there and passes its doctorate in 1870. It then opens a cabinet which is quickly a great success; he pleads with a great eloquence of the businesses before the court. He exerts until 1896. He founds and animates the Christian-social Parti Austrian ( Christlichsoziale Partei , CS). In 1886, with the Reichsrat of Vienna, he denounces the compromise of 1867, speaking about the “judeo-magyarism”. He renews his attacks in 1891, which is worth to him to be excluded from Reichsrat. In 1890, Lueger is elected with the Landtag of Austria, becoming one of the figureheads of the fight against the Libéralisme and the corrpution. The Christian-social party gains the municipal elections in Vienna in 1895. After three refusal, the emperor François-Joseph is resigned in 1897 so that Lueger becomes mayor of Vienna, following the success of the party of Lueger to the elections to Reichsrat. Lueger is re-elected mayor in 1903 and 1909. He dies during his mandate in 1910.

Effective administrator

Karl Lueger manages Vienna effectively. Of its municipal policy, the writer Stefan Zweig (of Jewish origin) written: “ Its way of managing the city was perfectly right and even typically democratic ”. A place of the center of Vienna, Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz is besides dedicated to him and decorated of an imposing monument in its honor.

Policy anti-semite

Lueger is an admiror of Edouard Drumont. Deputy at the Austrian Parliament, it votes, in 1887, in favor of the private bill of Georg Ritter von Schönerer to restrict the immigration of the Jews of Romania and Russia. He supports the Company Guido von List , an obscure nationalist company.

A thesis affirms that its Antisémitisme is justified less by its major feelings than by a populist approach and demagog intended to pile up voices. Nevertheless, on several occasions, it violently presents ideas anti-semites during his mandate of mayor.

It deeply will influence Adolf Hitler at the time of its stay Viennese and plays (indirectly) a crucial role in the birth of the Antisémitisme hitlérien. Hitler dedicated a great admiration to him and on several occasions brings back it in Mein Kampf :

“ In any case, it is on similar occasions that I became acquainted with the man and the party who decided fate of Vienna: Dr. Karl Lueger and the very hostile party Christian-social.
Je them stays when I arrived at Vienna. The man and the party were in my eyes reactionaries .
Mais an elementary feeling of justice was to modify this judgment, when I on the occasion to know the man and his work and my better founded appreciation became a declared admiration. Today more still than formerly I hold Dr. Lueger for the most eminent German burgomaster of all the temps.
How much my prejudices were swept by such a change in public opinion with respect to the Christian-social movement! ”

“ Its work as burgomaster of Vienna is immortal with the best direction of this word; but it could not thus been able to save monarchy - it was too late.
Le Dr. Lueger succeeds in a marvellous way in the practical side of its companies; but until it waited did not realize. ”

Further, Hitler also reports funerals of Lueger:

“ When the imposing funeral procession, at died of the burgomaster, was put moving of the hotel-of-city towards the Ringstrasse, I was among the hundreds of thousands of people who witnessed this sad ceremony. With my interior emotion the feeling mingled that all the work of this man had been vain, because the fate led this State unrelentingly to its loss. If Dr. Karl Lueger had lived in Germany, it had taken row among the first heads of our people; it was a misfortune for its work and itself which he lived in this impossible State ”.
