Karl Ludwig Hencke (April 8th 1793 - September 21st 1866) is a Astronome German amateur . He is sometimes confused with Johann Franz Encke, another German astronomer.

Biography

Employed of a post office of its trade, there are impassioned for astronomy, in particular the search for Astéroïde S. After the last discovery of asteroid, that of 4 Vesta in 1807, the professional astronomers had given up their research remained too a long time unfruitful.

Hencke takes them again towards 1830 and after 15 years of observations is rewarded for its efforts. He discovers two asteroids, initially 5 Astrée the December 8th 1845 then 6 Hébé on July 1st 1847.

These two discovered starts again the research of the asteroids on behalf of the astronomers and the observation of news small planets is done at the rate/rhythm at least one per annum as from 1847.

Prussia granted to him an annual pension of 300 $ (in dollars of 1968) for his discovery. ” -->
