Karl Liebknecht

Karl Liebknecht (August 13rd 1871, Leipzig; January 15th 1919, Berlin) was a revolutionary Communist German, member of the social democrat Parti Germany (SPD) like his/her father Wilhelm Liebknecht.

It engaged for the right of organization of the young people in political organizations and especially against militarism. Its book Militarism and antimilitarism involved a lawsuit and a custodial sentence, during which he was elected appointed with the Reichstag.

Biography

The day before the First World War, it takes part in a gathering against the war, organized with representatives of the social democrat parties Belgian, French and German with Cop-on-the Scheldt.

In August 1914, he is opposed to the vote appropriations of war, but vote for by discipline of party. In December 1914 he is the first deputy of the Reichstag to be voted against these appropriations of war, passing in addition to the instruction of its parliamentary group. The following year it involves in the refusal the deputy Otto Rühle, then later a score of socialist deputies.

With the beginning of the year 1915 it founds the movement spartakist with Rosa Luxemburg. It militates throughout the First World War by explaining why one should not fight the proletarians of other countries, but middle-class men of his own country. Forced with the military service, he refuses to make use of a weapon. At the time of the gathering of May 1st, 1916, called by the Spartakiste S, he again makes a speech against the war, is stopped, shown high treason and is imprisoned.

Released by the German Revolution of November 1918, it is with Rosa Luxemburg one of the founders of the Communist party of Germany. The first German Republic (" Republic of Weimar") is proclaimed but it is a socialist Republic which Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg claim.

During the revolt Spartakiste which faces directly the government of the social democrat Friedrich Ebert, it is favorable, contrary to Rosa Luxemburg, the armed insurrection. Both will be stopped then assassinated the January 15th 1919 by the Irregular forces, on order of the Gustav Noske, one of the leaders of the SPD, which had received for that the full powerss of the President of the Reich, Friedrich Ebert.
