Karkkila

Karkkila , Högfors in Swedish, is a city south of the Finland, in the area of Uusimaa.

It is the birthplace and of residence of Markku Uusipaavalniemi, star uncontested of the Finnish team of Curling medal-holder of money to OJ of Turin 2006.

History

The place is only populated very little before the discovery of the iron mines of Rautamäki at the beginning of the 19th century. The exploitation of these mines leads to the installation of a foundry in the vicinity, with the locality of Högfors, in 1822. The following decades see the development of a miniature industrial town, very rich compared to the close agricultural communes. The parish becomes independent under the name of Pyhäjärvi Uudenmaan lääni (Pyhäjärvi of the province of Uusimaa) in 1869, then Karkkila is founded in 1932 starting from this rural district, before becoming a city in 1977.

The city preserves an industrial tradition today. Over the political plan, the left dominates the debates, and more particularly the Alliance of the lefts, the old Communist party, very rare case of figure in Finland of today.

Industries suffered at the time of the great crisis of 1993, the city then saw its unemployment rate exploding and its population to decline. Today, the relative proximity of Helsinki enables him to gain new inhabitants.
