rang: 13th |} The Karelia of the South is the name of a area of the South-east of the Finland, pertaining to the province of the Finland-Southerner. She has as a capital Lappeenranta.

Geography

It is a small area, reduced by the history to the adequate portion. Only a few kilometers separate the lake Saimaa, from which the powerful river Vuoksi escapes, from the Russian border. The border regions are: in north the Savonie of North and the Karelia of North, in the west the Valley of Kymi. The Russia borders south-east.

History

This area corresponds only to one remainder of the southern part of the historical province of Karelia. The essence of the area, in particular all the Isthmus of Karelia, was annexed by the Soviet Union at the conclusion of the Guerre of Winter in 1940, annexation confirmed by the Finnish defeat of 1944 (Guerre of continuation). The historical capital of the area is Vyborg, Viipuri in Finnish. It is located today Russian side of the border in the Oblast of Leningrad.
