Karel Call

Karel Appel (April 25th 1921, Amsterdam - May 4th 2006, Zurich) was a painter Dutch, cofounder of the group CoBrA.

Biography

He studied with the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten of Amsterdam between 1940 and 1943, and started with exposed in 1946. He draws his influences from Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Jean Dubuffet. He joined the Nederlandse Experimentele Groep, then the CoBrA movement in 1948, with Corneille, Constant, Asger Jorn, Jan Nieuwenhuys and Christian Dotremont. In 1950, it goes to Paris, and develops an international reputation while travelling in Mexico, in the United States, to Yugoslavia and in Brazil.
