Places and Monuments

Founded at the end of the 16th century, the Buddhist sanctuary Erdene Zuu was built on order of the prince Abadai Khan just outside the enclosure of the ruins of the capital of the Mongolian Empire.

During centuries, Erdene Zuu was the religious sanctuary most important of Mongolia.

At the beginning of the 20th century, one counted more than 700 temples and dwellings (outside the enclosure) for nearly a thousand to monks. Partially destroyed in the years 1930 by the Soviet army, the site was restored at the end of the century and found its religious aspect partly.
