Kara-Bogaz-Gol

The Kara-Bogaz-Gol (what means in turkmene the " lake of the throat noire") is a not very major flooded depression located at the North-West of the Turkménistan. It constitutes a separate bay of the Caspian Sea by a dune cord and covers a surface of 18.400 km ². The volume of water contained in Kara-Bogaz-Gol varies periodically during the seasons

One of the major characteristics of Kara-Bogaz-Gol is its very high salt concentration (of 35%, to compare with the 1,2% Caspian Sea and the 3,5% of the oceans), mainly due to the force of evaporation. That explains why it practically does not have marine vegetation. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, salt is exploited industrially. This exploitation poses many medical and ecological problems at present.

In 1980, a stopping was built with the mouth with the Caspian Sea in order to better be able to control the level of water in particular.
