Karađorđe

Karađorđe , born in Viševac on September 14th, 1752 - died with Radovanje July 24th 1817, was a Militaire and a Serb Statesman .

He was in particular the chief of the First Serb revolt against the Turks and the founder of the dynasty of the Karađorđević.

Ethymology

Of its true name Georges Petrović, it was called by the Turks " Kara Yorgi" , into Serb transliterated " Karađorđe" , into Serb Cyrillic Карађорђе, " Georges Noir" , because of the fear that it inspired to them or, according to other sources, because of its dye sheepskin. In French, one often indicates it under the name of " Karageorges".

Biography

Karađorđe was born in a family from peasants, at one moment when the Serbia, since the 15th century, was still under Othoman domination .

In 1787, it had to flee in Austria to have killed a Turk. It engaged then in the Austrian army and took part in the austro-Turkish Guerre of 1788-1791; it took part in particular in the sides of the captain Radič Petrović with the release of the Krajina de Koča (Kočina krajina). After the war, it settled with Topola, where he became farmer and merchant of cattle.

The February 14th 1804, the notable survivors gathered in the small village of Orašac in the province of the Šumadija and Karađorđe was elected commander-in-chief of the insurrection.

In 1817, with the assistance of Filiki Eteria, Karađorđe returned to Serbia provided with a false passport. But he was assassinated in his sleep on the orders of Miloš Obrenović
