History
Kappa Alpha Theta was founded at the university DePauw in 1870 with an aim of giving a more important weight to the women in the universities with male majority of the time. Four women, Bettie Locke (Hamilton), Alice Allen (Brant), Bettie Tipton (Lindsay) and Hannah Fitch (Shaw), decided to create this organization of assistance to the women. They thus created the sorority to propose the honest spirit of existing fraternities. Kappa Alpha Theta was based partly on the fraternity of the father of Bettie Locke (Beta Theta pi) and on the fraternity of his/her brother (Phi Gamma Delta).
Bettie and its friend Alice Allen wrote together a constitution, the ceremonies, drew a badge and encouraged the other girls of the campus to return in the new sorority. It was necessary three years so that the project is on the rails. The first initiation proceeded the January 27th 1870. The first sorority with Greek letters reserved to the women had been born. The badge of the sorority is colors black and gilded. The sorority arrived then in the university of Indiana in May.
