Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaq ( Søndre Strømfjord in Danish) is a village of approximately 500 inhabitants of the Greenland, in the municipality of Sisimiut.
Its settlement started with-to leave 1941. After the catch of the Denmark by the German army during the Second world war, the defense of Greenland passed between the hands of the the United States. The latter then installed a military base on the site of Kangerlussuaq which quickly became important a hub air between the North America and the Europe. In 1950, the base is briefly turned over between the hands of the Denmark, but the United States quickly took again of it control at the time of the Cold war. After the fall of the the USSR, the utility of the disappeared base and this one were returned to the Greenland the September 30th 1992.
Today, Kangerlussuaq remains the most important airport of Greenland. The majority of the international flights forward by the local airport and not by that of the capital, Nuuk.
