Kalou Rinpoché

Kalou Rinpoché was born in 1905 in the area from Tréhor with the Kham (Eastern Tibet).

Biography of Kalou Rinpoché

The father of Kalou Rinpoché was 13th Ratak Pelzang Tülkou, a doctor and yogi, disciple of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Taye, of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and Mipham Rinpoché, all 3 Masters of the movement Rimé (nonsectarian).

At 13 years, the child enters to the monastery of Palpung where the 9th Taï Sitou Rinpoché gives him the name of Karma Rangdjoung Künkhyap. He continues his studies and obtains very young person the title of Khenpo (abbot). At 16 years, it makes a 3 years retirement under the direction of its Master root, LAMA Norbou Döndroup, of which it receives the complete transmission of the lines Karma Kagyü and Shangpa Kagyü. Expressing a leaning fort for the contemplative life, it begins at 25 years a long retirement in the mountains of the Kham, as a yogi wandering without any possession. At the end of 12 years, it must leave its hermitages, recalled by the 9th Taï Sitou Rinpoché to take the load of Master of meditation of the 3 years retirements to Palpung. At that time, the 16th Karmapa recognizes it like the incarnation of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Taye.

In the Forties, it accomplishes several voyages and pilgrimages, visit of many monasteries, gives lesson to revivify the Shangpa tradition and sign in particular with the regent with Lhassa. Then it turns over to the Kham where it continues its activity. In 1955, whereas it is 51 years old, the disorders related to the invasion of the Kham by the Chinese troops make it turn over to central Tibet. With Tsourphou, the 16th Karmapa requires of him to leave the Tibet in order to prepare the ground in India and with the Bhutan for the exile. In 1957, Kalou Rinpoché is with the Bhutan in the capacity as chaplain of the royal family. It there establishes two centers of retirement and orders 300 monks. In 1966, it is established in India and bases the Monastery of Sonada, with Darjeeling, on a ground which Kyabjé Trijang Rinpoché offered to him, one of the tutors of the Dalaï Lama. This monastery becomes its main home and the seat of the line Shangpa Kagyü, with a center for the 3 years retirements. Towards 1968, it meets its first Western disciples. This LAMA is one of the first to have introduced Boudhisme Tibetan in Occident. It founded about fifty centers throughout the world, in particular in Burgundy, with the temple of Kagyu Ling. In 1989, it was withdrawn close to his, in the the Himalayas, where it died. He also teaches with all the Tulku S of high ranking of the school Karma Kagyü, like with the Dalaï Lama itself and with number of guéshés tantric Gelugpa of the colleges. In 1971, encouraged by the Dalaï Lama and the Karmapa, it accepts the invitation of Western disciples and goes on a first journey in Europe and North America. It founds a first center in Canada and form a group of meditation in Paris. During its following voyages, in 1974 and 1976 -77, the interest of the Westerners is confirmed and it founds in France the first center for 3 years retirements in Occident, Dashang Kagyu Ling, known also under the name of Temple of the miles Bouddhas. The following year, it founds Kagyu Rintchen Tcheu Ling in Montpellier and blesses into 1987 work of a temple built in the purest Himalayan tradition which will be devoted in 1990 by Bokar Rinpoché. For the centers which it created in North America and Europe, it makes come about fifteen spangled which will ensure the continuity and the development of the activities. Between 1971 and 1989, it thus carries out ten great voyages, teaching Dharma with the increasingly many Westerners. It is in 1980 that Kalou Rinpoché, which has just given to the Pagode wood of Vincennes, for the first time in Occident, the great Initiation of Kalachakra followed by a very many assistance, meets Jean Ober, general secretary of the Buddhist International institute which wished to improve animation of it. Thus is born the project from the Temple Kagyu-Dzong whose first stone is posed the March 20th 1983 and who will be built in 2 years. In 1983, Kalou Rinpoché gives in India during several months major cycle of transmissions of being able of Rinchen Terdzö, in the presence of the 4 regents of the Karmapa and of thousands of monks, nuns and laic. In 1989, its health declines and the May 10th, it dies in Sonada in posture of meditation, remaining 3 days in samâdhi.

Kalou Rinpoché has the appearance of a pioneer in the diffusion of Buddhism Tibetan in Occident. It leaves behind him an immense spiritual heritage for its disciples and quantity of centers throughout the world. Reincarnation of Kalou Rinpoché

The September 17th 1990, its young incarnation, Yangsi Kalou, was born with Darjeeling, in India of LAMA Gyaltsen and his Drolkar wife. LAMA Gyaltsen, the nephew of Kalou Rinpoché, had been since its youth the secretary of Rinpoché.

Taï Sitou Rinpoché recognized officially Yangsi Kalou the March 25th 1992, explaining why it had received signs of Kalou Rinpoché. Taï Sitou Rinpoché sent a letter of recognition with Gyaltsen of LAMA to the 14th Dalaï Lama, which confirmed the recognition.

The February 28th 1993, Yangsi Kalou was established in Samdrup Tarjayling. Taï Sitou Rinpoché and Gyaltsab Rinpoché chaired the ceremony, helped of Bokar Rinpoché. Taï Sitou Rinpoché carried out the ceremony of haircut and gave to the young person tulku the name of Karma Ngedön Tenpay Gyaltsen the Banner of Victoire of the Lesson of the True Direction. It is known now like 3rd Kalou Rinpoché.
