Kalavryta

Kalavryta (in Greek: Καλάβρυτα) is a town of Achaïe in the east of Patras, to 40 km in the south of Aigion.

The city has a school, a college, a church, a post office, banks and a station.

Kalavryta knew the first combat of the Guerre of Greek independence. The city was also the place, the December 13rd 1943 of a massacre by the German troops in reprisals with died of 81 German soldiers. All the male, population 14 years old and more (700 men) was killed by machine-guns at the exit of the village. The village was then set fire to, as well as the monastery of Aghia Lavra, where the war of independence had started.
