The kakuro (in Japanese: ja カックロ, kakkuro , abbreviation of ja 加算クロス kansan-cross-country race , “addition in cross”) are a logical Jeu that one often perceives like a numerical adaptation of the cross Mots. With the Japan, this play is known under the name of Kakkuro and its popularity is immense. In England, The Guardian started to publish this play in September 2005. Since, much of other British newspapers followed and publish daily a grid.

It is almost identical to the arrow Nombres published by cerebral Sport , in which the same combination of figures cannot be used twice in the same grid. Also, although the " Kakuro" that is to say appeared in France about 2004-2005 in the wake of the Sudoku, the play in itself is known since good longer.

Description

Usually, the play uses a grid comprising of the boxes filled (black) or vacuums (white), of a size 16×16 generally. In addition to the line top and the left-hand column, entirely black, the grid, a such grid of crosswords, is divided into horizontal or vertical “words” by the black boxes.

The black boxes itself are divided into two by a diagonal going of the corner in top on the left to the corner in bottom on the right, so that the “word” on its line and the “word” below can be defined in the same box.

The objective of the play is to fill the empty boxes (white) with figures between 1 and 9 so that the sum of all the figures of a number is equal to the number registered in the box filled (black) defining the number, and that a number cannot contain the same figure twice. This last rule is that which makes possible the creation of grids to single solution.

In the version arrow Numbers published by cerebral Sport , the same sequence of figures can appear only once by grid. This rule spices the play and makes it possible to avoid grids with several solutions.

Methods of resolution

To solve a grid, it is necessary to start in general by finding a box of which possible combinations horizontal (sum of the line) and vertical (sum of the column) have only one common figure.

Example

If a line of 2 boxes whose sum is 4 crosses a column of 2 boxes whose sum is 3, then:
  • the only combination for the line is 1+3;
  • the only combination for the column is 1+2;
  • the box with their intersection can thus be worth only 1, only common figure;
  • one thus deduces the value from the other boxes of the line and the column of this box;
  • and so on…

Possible examples of sums

  • 3 with two digits: 1,2
  • 4 with two digits: 1,3
  • 5 with two digits: 1,4 or 2,3
  • 6 with two digits: 1,5 or 2,4
  • 7 with two digits: 1,6 or 2,5 or 3,4
  • 8 with two digits: 1,7 or 2,6 or 3,5
  • 9 with two digits: 1,8 or 2,7 or 3,6 or 4,5
  • 10 with two digits: 1,9 or 2,8 or 3,7 or 4,6
  • 11 with two digits: 2,9 or 3,8 or 4,7 or 5,6
  • 12 with two digits: 3,9 or 4,8 or 5,7
  • 13 with two digits: 4,9 or 5,8 or 6,7
  • 14 with two digits: 5,9 or 6,8
  • 15 with two digits: 6,9 or 7,8
  • 16 with two digits: 7,9
  • 17 with two digits: 8,9
  • the numbers equal to or higher than 18 are not decomposable with two digits.
  • the numbers lower or equal to 5 are not decomposable with three digits.
  • 6 with three digits: 1,2,3
  • 7 with three digits: 1,2,4
  • 8 with three digits: 1,2,5 or 1,3,4
  • 23 with three digits: 6,8,9
  • 24 with three digits: 7,8,9
  • the numbers equal to or higher than 25 are not decomposable with three digits.
  • the numbers lower or equal to 9 are not decomposable with four digits.
  • 10 with four digits: 1,2,3,4
  • 11 with four digits: 1,2,3,5
  • 29 with four digits: 5,7,8,9
  • 30 with four digits: 6,7,8,9
  • 45 : 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 (only decomposable number with 9 digits)

One cannot break up a number higher than 45.

One can easily lengthen this list.
