Kagoshima

Kagoshima (鹿児島市, kagoshimashi ) is a city of the Japan, capital of the Préfecture of Kagoshima, on the island of Kyushu, with the Japan. One calls the city the Naples of the East, considering his localization on a bay (the Caldeira d' Aira) and his proximity with the volcano Sakurajima.

Geography

January 1st 2005, the city had a population of 605.650 inhabitants, a density of 1107,81 hab/km ² and an total surface area of 546,71 km ².

History

Kagoshima was the capital of the Clan Satsuma.
  • August 15th 1549: Unloading with Kagoshima of saint François Xavier and beginning of the bréve evangelization of the south of Japan.
  • 1636 : Guillaume Courter, French Dominican priest, penetrates in Japan in all clandestinity, in spite of the prohibition of Christianity in Japan. It is captured, tortured, and killed in Kagoshima on September 29th, 1637.
  • 1863, Royal Navy British bombards the city to punish the daimyo Satsuma of the murder of Charles Richardson, giving place to.
  • April 1st 1889, Kagoshima obtains the statute of city and obtains a municipality.
