Kabardino-Balkarie

The Kabardino-Balkarie (or Kabardo-Balkarie ) is an autonomous republic located in the area of the the Caucasus. It is one of the seven Caucasian autonomous republics belonging to the Federation of Russia (the Chetchnia, the Daguestan, the Ossétie-of-North, the Ingouchie, the Karatchaiévo-Tcherkessie, the Adyguée and Kabardino-Balkarie). They are essentially in the north of the Caucasian territory.

The area of the Caucasus covers approximately 440.000 km ² and includes/understands an assembly line forming a barrier stretched on 1250 km which rises with more than 4.000 m in its central part.

In the south, the Transcaucasia consists of three States become independent in 1991 with the fall of the Soviet Union: the Georgia, the Arménie and the Azerbaïdjan. The Kabardes and the Balkars divide the territory of this autonomous republic (12 500 km ²) on the northern slope of the Caucasus, where the cuminant point of chain rises, the mount Elbrouz (5633 m). They traditionally practice the breeding of the horses and the sheep. In the fertile valleys, which received a hydro-electric installation, they cultivate cereals, the vines and citrus fruits.

Capital: Naltchik (235 000 inhabitants in 1995)

Population: 543.000 inhabitants in 1970,760 000 inhabitants in 1990,785 000 inhabitants in 1995 (Kabardes 45,6%, Russian, 35,1%, Ingouches and other people Caucasian 8,1%).

History

  • the territory was annexed by Russia in 1557.

  • September 1st 1921: creation of the autonomous region of Kabardes or Kabardins (Tcherkesses Eastern);
  • 1922: creation of the autonomous region of Kabardino-Balkarie;
  • December 5th 1936: creation of the autonomous republic of Kabardino-Balkarie;
  • December 30th 1991: behavior of a referendum for the creation of the Republic of Balkarie. The congress of the people restores the State de Balkarie.
  • September 26th 1992: demonstration anti-Russian in Naltchik, after the arrest of the president of the “Confederation of the mountain people of the Caucasus”.
The country belongs to the “Caucasian explosives magazine”. Freedom of the press is currently not respected in Kabardino-Balkarie.
