Musical career

Beginnings in the music (1999-2003)

August 1st

Eye To The Telescopes (2004-2005)

Its first album Eye To The Telescope is the consequence of this investigatory imagination. “My songs examine and explore small specific emotions, situations or stories”, explains it. “They are songs of kitchen table, like a conversation between me and another person. It is almost as if extraterrestrial had been sent to obtain emotive samples of the human beings and to gather them on a disc. ”

KT passed its childhood in the Scottish hills with his/her parents in love with nature. The music had never really belonged to its life until his/her older brother discovers the joys of the metal. " I would have sat down apart from his room and I would have recorded his music through the porte."

Its first album was the original soundtrack of the film the History without end , but its preferred is Hunky Dory of David Bowie. “Its music really started my love for the writing and a little space things” says it. “I was thoroughly in the science fiction books being kid. My dad is physicist and it was accustomed to taking us along my brothers and me in his laboratory when we were small. We played plays with liquid nitrogen and generators VAN DE GRAAFF. It had the keys of the observatory of the university St Andrew and it awoke us in the middle of the night to show us the Halley's Comet. It is partly why the album is called Eye To The Telescope . ”

The young person and activates KT learned the Piano, then the Flûte and little by little its voice developed its high individuality colors, " I am sure that I learned how to sing because somebody gave me a band of Ella Fitzgerald - it was my professor of chant."

During its adolescence, KT started to write its own songs, " But it was right idiocies with the oozing water of pink of love, a complete vomit of love for puppy. But me, I believed that I rockais." To 16, she learned the guitar, involving herself with a book of music. It is finished by it of this sentimentalism which she considers excessive then.

In the search of experiments and independence, it gains a purse at the school of Kent in Connecticut, in England News and takes part in concerts with the Grateful Dead and 10,000 Maniacs. It also formed its first group, The Happy Campers, and played a crowd in popular concerts. " After the second week when I played a very open music, I was their “special guest of Scotland! ”, " she remembers.

The next stage of its personal odyssey is a course of music in Royal Holloway College, where it tried to form another group, but did not succeed. " I managed to gain Battle Of The Bands with a player of Mandoline! It was me or eleven groups of goth and I have gagné."

After having " overcome the goths" , KT is turned over to Saint Andrews and was immersed in the popular scene which generated The Beta Band and Fence Collective, formed a group with Pip Dylan of Fence and rectified its taste with a mode with the perfume of James Brown, Lou Reed, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash and PJ Harvey.

A few years and groups later, it was the moment of truth for KT Tunstall. It is in London that it forges employment relationships and concludes its first contracts. It started to make projects of writing with the Swedish author-producer Martin Terefe, Jimmy Hogarth of Orcadian and Tommy D, him so London. With more than one hundred songs in its pocket, she works with her new group with its first album and has with the bar Steve Osborne producing legendary of U2/New Order/Happy Mondays.

“Steve was producer and engineer - it did everything. It even invited me to remain with him and its family as that we could work longer. We recorded the album in a small sympathetic studio in the wood of Wiltshire. It was the house of this handicapped type. The vocal cabin was the plan inclined for its wheel chair between its room to sleep and the control room. As that you could sing while going down or while going up. It perfect, was so believed. There was this small hut in the garden where all the local groups repeat. It was like the Delivery. ”

Without the psychopathic buildings, probably. And no banjo of combat either. " I did not want to take too much equipment in the studio because it is when you must be inventive that you obtain the interesting music. Tom Waits say that if you want something which resembles a box of paperboard struck by a boot, then it is necessary to strike a box of paperboard with a botte."

This approach low quality, visceral, “bottée” was inspired by the recent conversion of KT to the whistle and the crackling of the primitive blues. " As a whole, I am a positive person, but I like the dark side of the music and I will want to always explore that. It is an album which sounds very positive but there are things below, it is clair."

From the exit of Eye To The Telescopes , my life was a vague whole in the concerts, initially like support for Joss Stone, then a round in Europe, by singing with “klezmer hip-hop” group Oi Va Voi, which put fire at the scene of Avalon with Glastonbury. " It was as a sun which flames and I continued with a turquoise collar, a dress glamor and muddy boots and that was really the best concert, really emotive. I had emails of people saying that they cried. They promised that it was not because of the drogues."

For the future, it seems that KT Tunstall does not intend to change way: “I never wondered it. I never had a plan of help. I know that I will never make anything else. ”
