KIS

KIS is a group of Hard rock founded in the Queens with New York in 1972 by the guitarist Paul Stanley (of his true name Stanley Eisen born in 1952) and the bass player Gene Simmons (Chaïm Witz, 1949).

Biography

Difficult beginnings

Following the failure of their first recording (under the name of Wicked To ballast, album ever distributed), Gene and Paul radicalize their approach of the music and the scene. Joined by the beater Peter Criss (Peter Crisscoula, 1945) and the guitarist Paul " Ace" Frehley (1951), enfant terrible of Bronx, they decide to adopt a particularly theatrical and provocative look, in the line of Alice Cooper. They are dissociated in addition with an integral make-up of the face, which transforms them into true supermen of the rock'n'roll roll: Gene is the Demon, Paul the Child of Stars, Ace the Warrior of space and Peter the Cat.

The first steps are difficult. Between the clubs which refuse these daubed rowdy characters and the groups who fear to have dangerous outsiders in first part, the quartet pains to find engagements. Two meetings prove capital then. The first is that of Bill Aucoin, manager advised who is certain to hold the rare pearl. The second is that of Neil Bogart, director of Casablanca Records and in the search of stars for his new label. Aucoin convinces Bogart to sign KIS on the only faith of a promising demonstration. The group returns in at the end of studio 73 and is confined quickly of a first album éponyme. Y appear in particular " Strutter" , " Cold Gin" and " Deuce". In spite of a publicity campaign monster, the disc makes only to one shy person entered Signal 100 American. The group makes its first appearance on television and plays " Black Diamond". Criticisms descend the quartet without shame and promise a disastrous fate to him.

After a short series in concerts, KIS turns over in studio and leaves Hotter Than Hell in November 1974. The tone hardens (" Parasite") but success is still not with return. The group then squares all the continent while exposing a show rich colors (explosions, guitars on fire, platforms…) and starts to forge an increasingly broad base of fans.

At the beginning of 1975, Dressed To Kill (n° 37 US) is in the vats. In spite of encouraging results, Bogart is at the edge of the bankruptcy because the authorized investments are very far from being compensated. Aucoin then decides to play the whole for the whole. Noting that, in spite of the weakness of the sales, the group manages to join together increasingly large crowd, it decides to organize some concerts in the large arenas of the country to record a Live. It goes until emptying its own account to finance the project. During the summer, KIS plays at the head of poster in front of 12000 spectators in Cobo Hall of Detroit.

With the re-entry, Alive is born. Everyone crosses the fingers but suspense is of short duration. Two weeks after its exit (US n°9), it is gold disc, quickly becoming double platinum. In 2007, this disc is certified 6 times disc of platinum.

Kissmania

In a few weeks, KIS becomes largest of the rock groups American. The fans form what quickly becomes the " KIS Army" and meet in front of the buildings of a radio which refused to diffuse the discs of the group. The tread, the live version of Rock Roll All Nite enters Signal 20 and a Merchandizing juicy starts to be born. In 1976 the group at the head obtains the dedication playing of poster to Anaheim Stadium (California) in front of 55.000 fans.

It is however time to turn over in Studio in order to prove that the group is as able on scene as on album. KIS then calls upon one of the largest producers of the moment, Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper…). Its relations with Ace Frehley quickly become stormy so much so that this one will be replaced on several catches. '' Destroyer '' (US n°11) is born in April in 1976 and reached the statute of platinum disc only with the précommandes. It is essential overall like a great classic of the US rock'n'roll thanks to titles like Detroit Rock'n'roll City , Shout It Out Loud , God Of Thunder and Beth , the ballade sung by Peter Criss which is sold to more than one million specimens. Thanks to this “sugar refinery”, the quartet ceases being perceived like a malefic entity and sees its popularity crossing a new threshold.

After a first round in Europe, the group sweeps once again the the United States then turns over derechef in studio, this time under the crook of Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix…). Wishing to return to the roughness of its first albums, KIS is locked up in a theater closed down for the recordings. This return to a basic rock'n'roll does not prevent Rock Roll Over (US n°11) at the end of the year, left, to become in its double turn platinizes.

The group then receives the honors of a cartoon to her name published at Marvel. To make promotion of it, the musicians agree to give a little their blood for red ink. This first number will remain the best sale of Marvel during 10 years. KIS flies away then for the Japan, also shaken to him by a true KIS handled. By filling four times the Budokan of Tokyo, the group beats the record of Beatles.

It is at that time that internal tensions are born within the formation. Ace Frehley and Peter Criss more and more badly support the success of KIS as well as the leadership of Stanley and Simmons on the compositions. The two musicians in addition know problems of increasingly alarming drug and alcohol.

In spite of that, KIS is again with work as of the first days of 1977, always with Eddie Kramer. With Love Gun (US n°4), KIS reaches the tops and the new American round is most spectacular that the group knew. The three concerts of the Forum of Los Angeles are recorded for a new album live.

In spite of the protests of Frehley and Criss, Stanley and Simmons decide to add a face studio to it. After the exit of Alive II (US n°7), it becomes obvious that only prolonged holidays can avoid final Split.

This absence does not prevent the cases of the group and its company of derivative products Niocua (Aucoin with back) to fill. Initially, compilation Double Platinum (US n°22) occupies the ground. Then, without counting a new data base Marvel, objects with the effigy of the group (flipper, headstocks, cups…) invade the market. One speaks even about a project of amusement park.

In order to calm the starting desires of some, the group decides to launch out in a new company: the recording of the albums solos of each member of the group, each one appearing under the name of KIS and in a simultaneous way. The four discs appear in 1978 and know various fortunes.

The palm returns to that of Ace Frehley which is at the same time that whose design was the least expensive and who receives the most favorable reception. It profits even from a radio hit with the title " New York Groove". The guitarist thinks whereas it can without problem launch out in solo and the Simmons/Stanley pair will have to promise concessions to retain it. Casablanca Records is praised of a total of 5 million précommandes for the four discs but a good number, especially for Criss and Simmons will be cancelled.

A little later the Quatuor is found for the turning of a telefilm, KIS meets the Phantom off the Park ( KIS against the phantoms in France) which does not add anything to its glory. A success of audience for the NBC chain, but a disaster for the image of the group.

KIS starts to think of its return on disc whereas the vague disco music makes fury, threatening the most solid bastions of the hard rock. Simmons and Stanley choose the compromise finally and call upon Vinnie Poncia, producer specialized in the music of discotheque. Brilliant idea or monumental error? The future was not going to be long in saying it.

Rise and fall

As of the beginning of the sessions of recording, the health condition of Peter Criss proves very alarming. It is finally replaced on almost all the titles by Anton Fig, a beater of studio which had worked with Frehley. Dynasty (US n°9) leaves beginning 1979 and knows a success fulgurating thanks to the tube hardware/disco music " I was made for lovin' you" who explodes on a worldwide scale.

All seems to go for best and yet the group is always at the edge of the explosion. The American round does not meet same enthusiasm as the preceding one. Whereas the hardest fans are sulky the commercial turn of the quartet, the rooms fill from now on young children accompanied by their parents. KIS does not have anything any more to see with an rock group and the kissmania seems to turn to the Overdose. Limed in their imaginary characters, the musicians do not control anything any more. Basing itself only on the sales, they grant once again their confidence to Poncia for the following album in which Criss does not take part. Appeared the following year, Unmasked (US n°35) is hardly disc of gold. Musicalement drowned by “connected” arrangements of Poncia, the disc is then the target of the press which can be finally avenged for a group of which she announces the end prematurely.

Peter Criss is congédié shortly after and is replaced by Eric Carr (Paul Caravello, with the make-up of fox) for the round to come. After a single concert with the the United States, KIS flies away for Europe where it is accompanied by a British group then unknown, Iron Maiden. The quartet goes then in Australia where the greatest stages post complete in a few hours.

Of return to the fold, the group recalls Bob Ezrin for next album: an ambitious concept album accompanied by a film in the line of the The Wall by Pink Floyd produces by same Ezrin. But the difficulties accumulate. Frehley, eager of a return to a pure and hard rock'n'roll, is upon the departure hostile and returns again in conflict with the producer. Following problems of script, the realization of film is given up and a few months after the exit of the album, Neil Bogart, the other 3eminence grise of the group, die of the continuations of a long illness.

After a stay prolonged in studio, Music From The Elder (US n°75) is born in 1981 and makes a complete bide. One denounces his pretentious character and the new experiments which saw KIS passing from the music of club to the orchestras to wind and cord. Master key completely unperceived, it is impossible for the group to leave in round, and KIS breaks with their manager, Bill Aucoin.

It is time to return to the fundamental ones. The group is locked up in studio to put out of box more traditional pieces which are reproduced on a new compilation left the following year, Killers , at the request of the recording company. A little later Frehley is victim of a serious car accident and is found immobilized during several months. It benefits from it unfortunately to add to its alcohol problems the taste of the drugs. For stage the absence of sound Guitarist, KIS Off engages several musicians of replacement for the album Creatures The Night (US n°45) which marks a clear modernization and a return towards the heavy metal. One knows today that this new sound was mainly with Vinnie Vincent, “phantom” guitarist of the recordings who soon will eclipse Frehley. Although it is reproduced on the small pocket, this last announces little before the round that it leaves the group.

In the USA, KIS plays in rooms far from being filled, but in South America its glory seems intact since with the Stade Maracana of Rio, the group brings together 147.000 spectators for a single show.

Low masks

At this time, Stanley, Simmons, Carr and Vincent put the last hand at their new album. Little before its exit, they creates sensation while appearing for the first time without make-up in a special program on MTV. " Lick It Up" (US n°24) profits from this large publicity stunt and becomes the first platinum disc of the group since " Dynasty". Especially, the group seems to reappear musicalement by confirming the impressions of the preceding album and the world tour which follows has the appearance of a reconquest.

However, the sauce does not take between Vinnie Vincent and both boss of KIS which refuse to see it too much mixing with the direction of the group. Finally, the guitarist is congédié and replaced by Mark St John. During this time, Simmons is devoted to an old passion: the cinema. HE plays the part of malicious vis-a-vis Tom Selleck in Runaway , a film of science fiction of Michael Crichton. He joined then Stanley for the needs for the new album which for the first time is completely produced by the two leaders.

Animalize (US n°19) exceeds the sales of its predecessor, in particular thanks to individual the " Heaven One Fire". He however marks the beginning of the decline discographic of the group which is surrounded type-setters external (Desmond Child) and suffers from the lack of investment from Simmons (cinema, production…). Stanley becomes gradually the figurehead of this new KIS thanks to its greater fickleness and to its compositions cut for the rock'n'roll of the years 1980. Moreover, the adoption of glamisant look a near to that of Ratt or Dokken anchors KIS in a transitory fashion of which it had however been a precursor.

For the time being, the group starts a new world tour but St John is reached of a syndrome paralyzing and it must be replaced in catastrophe by Bruce Kulick, fourth guitarist of the group in three years.

In 1985, KIS returns with Asylum (US n°20). The group uses thoroughly the new possibilities of the video clip to guarantee its presence on MTV. The strategy seems paying since at the time of the following round, the popularity of the quartet reached of new tops and allows him to join again with the shows with large spectacle. The request is such as the group prolongs its American round until the summer 1986, cancelling with the passage its appearance in Monsters off Rock'n'roll in England.

Stanley and Simmons consider the period convenient to strike a great blow and to pursue the Bon Jovi and another fashion plates which squattent the top of the Billboard. They thus call upon the producer Ron Nevison who is with the Hard F.M what Poncia was with the disco music. Appeared in 1987, Crazy Nights (US n°18) is logically the most commercial album of the group since Unmasked . The following round however testifies to a certain wear. So in England or in Japan, the quartet always fills the tank, the USA seem to be wearied of these old supers heroes become too pink candy. KIS made despite everything a paperboard in second position of the Monsters off Rock'n'roll of 1988 in front of more 100  000 spectators.

In spite of that, separation seems close. Simmons is invested less and less and Stanley undertakes even a round of the clubs in solo. With exhaustion close to the glam rock'n'roll, KIS becomes rized of the new generation which points its nose. What good is it to continue?

A long transition

The group is however soon of return in studio to put out of box some news for new compilations " Smashes, Trashes And Hits" (n° 22 US and double platinum). The following year appears " Hot In The Shade" (US n°29) which in spite of first individual convincing (" Small channel To It") cause only little enthusiasm. KIS hesitates to be risked in a new round until the first months of 1990 when the ballade " Forever" climb until the 8th place of the American charts. The album is started again by this success surprised and the quartet honors finally more than 150 dates during the year.

Always little justified, Stanley and Simmons record with any chance a resumption of the " God Gave Rock'n'roll Roll To You" of Money which is a tube in England. The 2 leaders finally decide to create an album worthy of this name and contact Bob Ezrin. The producer accepts in a condition: to go back seriously to work. The army maneuvers start but Eric Carr falls ill. The beater is reached of a Cancer and dies at the end of 1991. After some time of hesitations, the three survivors decide to continue and engage Eric Singer. " Revenge" (US n°6) in 1992 is born and receives a reception worthy of its quality. Finished the smoky discs and will mascara it with the Motley Crue, " Revenge" has been the best album of KIS for at least 10 years. The round which however follows sorrow to fill the tank and gives place to a " Alive III" (US n°9) which is very criticized for its many final improvements in studio.

KIS found all the same its credibility and starts with miser seriously on its legend to impose some on the youth of this end of century. First stage: the realization of the tribute album " KIS My Ass" (US n°20) where one finds in particular Yoshiki (of X japan), Lenny Kravitz, Anthrax or Garth Brooks. The disc is one of greatest successes of the kind and is the occasion of a troop of testimonys of fans of long times like Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. The quartet finds shortly after at the head poster of the American southern round of the Monsters Of Rock'n'roll of 1994 then plays in Australia and in Japan.

In parallel, the group celebrates its 20 years of existence and creates the KIS Conventions, kind of itinerant museum where one finds a collection of all the derivative products of the Années 1970, instruments of the musicians… One also attends to with it with the concerts of doubles groups made up and disguised like KIS but also services unplugged of the true KIS. In spite of an exorbitant entrance fee (100$ of the time), the formula cases through the USA. Not organ, Peter Criss condescends to appear on scene with his/her former colleagues at the time of one in the concerts. A murmur then starts to go up in the American press. And if Frehley made some in the same way? A fort running of nostalgia towards old the line up develops at the same moment, as well on behalf of the old fans as of the new generation which dreams to see in truth the rock'n'roll roll circus which one persists in making the commemoration. However, Stanley and Simmons are then completing a new album studio, " Carnival Off Souls" with Kulick and Singer. The first echoes of some critics rock'n'roll privileged to have heard it are very favorable, but its exit is mysteriously pushed back. Can be not so mysteriously that.

Circus, rock'n'roll and business

In 1995, KIS announces that it will yield with the ritual of MTV Unplugged. Nothing illogical with that considering the enthusiasm caused by the recent acoustic concerts quartet at the time of conventions. Frehley and Criss are invited for the last pieces at the time of meeting again which feel the setting in scene.

" MTV Unplugged" (n° 15 US) leaves at the beginning of the Summer. It does not cause a true tidal wave, everyone being already turned towards the continuation, the hypothetical advertisement of the reformation of the original line up with make-up, costumes… Officially, KIS is always on the point of leaving its new album studio and the Stanley/Simmons pair benefits from the media interest to promote a luxurious work on the group, " Kisstory" of more than 400 pages and reserved to the most fortunate fans.

Suspense ends at the time of a press conference for which KIS held in all simplicity an aircraft carrier of US Navy. Stanley, Simmons, Frehley and Criss appear made up in the costumes of the round of 1977 and announce a gigantic American round which must exceed in spectacle all that was already made. Quickly, the figures give the tournis. All tickets of this " Tour" meeting; leave in a few days (27 minutes for the 47  000 places of the first show in Tiger Stadium de Détroit). One speaks about a seal of several million dollars for each musician.

In a few months, the round becomes most lucrative of the year and is not long in transforming itself into world tour. Kulick throws sponge and announces that it does not hope to await a possible return of its two ex-owners. This reformation which was not to initially be that provisional proves with final seeming final. " Carnival Off Drunk: Final The Sessions" (n° 27 US) leaves finally in 1997 as an official semi album with a simple aim of making profitable the expenses of the recording.

At the end of the round, the original KIS turns over in studio for the first time since 1979. " Psycho Circus" (n° 3 US) appears in 1998 and it is clear that the music is not any more main concern. KIS is become again what it was at the end of the years 1970: a formidable machine to collect the dollars via an intensive merchandizing.

The rounds which follow are phenomenally lucrative, but rancours flash back quickly and four years later, the group separates again after delicate legal procedures.

As from 2004 and to date, Peter and Ace are replaced by Eric Singer (again) and Tommy Thayer, which covers their respective panoplies (because of the repurchase of the rights on their respective make-up at the time of the contract bringing together the four original members for the world wide turn psycho circus, by G.Simmons and P.Stanley).

Reasons of the separation of 2000-2002

It is in years 2000,2001 and at the beginning of 2002 that KIS makes the round Farewell Tour, which in French wants to say Tournée Of good-bye. Ace Frehley had declared during the reformation of the original line-up that it " did not see itself more than 4 or 5 years on this événement". The Farewell round was included/understood by him like the end of KIS, at least for what was positioned back.

Logically, Ace Frehley thus declares that the round of good-bye is for him exactly that. What Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley intend on the contrary to prolong, considering the extremely lucrative side of all the round. They project new rounds, Frehley does not wish it. Gene Simmons declares " One will not wait eternally until Ace decides. If it does not come, the train will leave without lui". The last and final rupture are consumed, always on a misunderstanding principal Simmons/Frehley, the two emblématiques tendencies of the group, whereas Stanley is the permanent frame and especially the essential actor of the overall animation of the Live show.

Simmons always was completely in the commercial side, going until declaring with Guitarist Magazine on its during " Bass" , “I have anything with foutre of it that one regards me or not as a good bass player”. The tone is given, always very believed. It is him which developed the extraordinary commercial machine of KIS in its paroxysm.

Contrary, Ace Frehley is completely in the artistic side, and far from gifted for the commercial side (which was worth to him a considerable delay in the exit of its very first album solo after its departure of KIS. He declared for this reason “I had stupidity to trust a 19 year old kid” in connection with the label having to sign it, before it is not taken again by Megaforce). It is besides this deficiency on this level which will make that, in the financial troubles, the reformation of the original KIS will be an aubaine financially, but always precalculated by Stanley/Simmons, which will benefit from it to repurchase the rights of the make-up, undoubtedly in preparation for what is KIS today.

However Frehley/Simmons, the glace/le fire, it is well the miraculous receipt of the true KIS: make-up instilled by an idea of Frehley, at the origin of the logo also, and " the son" KIS, combined with the taste of the comics of Simmons and its direction of the businesses, which will make ideas of the one, a good development for the other.

Besides KIS pains to bring out a real album of KIS with new compositions. Stanley-Simmons wrote little together: generally they write each separate title. On the contrary, Frehley could collaborate in all the styles, in addition to its clean perforated, always more hardware of the group. This alchemy, Frehley it ace never completely included/understood: if Simmons and Stanley never have " finds; the son" otherwise than with him (although V. Vincent had been technically much better), Frehley left KIS loses the ingredient which Stanley Simmons brings to its compositions and its career solo forever have neither in its scenic service, nor in the pieces, the same force as with KIS.

Stanley, at the time of the exit of its album solo, learn the same thing. The album solo of Simmons at the great time of KIS had shown that for Simmons, it was even more obvious. Stanley/Simmons/Frehley, whatever the beater even if in power and technique, Eric Carr were undoubtedly what KIS had of better, thus carry on their way without never finding same alchemy, although Simmons is very happy service of Thommy Thayer.

Farewell Tour was logically to thus be the last. But it was necessary well to include/understand the last round of the original line-up reformed in 1996.

It will not finish any being prolonged as long as the dollars will return in the escarcelle one of the old couple Stanley Simmons.

Members

Of 1972 with 1980:
  • Paul Stanley: rhythmic guitarist and singer
  • Gene Simmons: bass player and singer (leader of the group)
  • Peter Criss: beater and singer
  • Ace Frehley: guitarist soloist and singer
then

Peter Criss reinstated the group the day before an Australian round which was the occasion of the exit of " The KIS Symphony" (or " Alive IV") with as the name indicates it, a symphony orchestra, in 2003, but left the group for problems of cramps to the arm preventing it from playing too a long time.

Anecdotes

  • Peter Criss, the first beater of the group, has just announced that he is on the point of leaving three albums solo (in a different time), while Ace recently passed on television for part of poker between stars of the rock'n'roll.

  • Ace Frehley is regarded as one of the best guitarists in the world by certain classifications.

  • Paul Stanley made a pause, to maintain its career solo with the album Live To Win , whose title is in connection with its life.

  • As you could certainly notice it, KIS enclosed the Winter Olympics of 2002.

  • Ace had an car accident after having consumed a too great quantity of alcohol.
  • There exist two groups of dwarves who pay homages to KIS: Mini-KIS and Tiny-KIS.

  • Ace said that Tommy Thayer is the best substitute than the group could have found

  • Ace as announced as it prepares a new album actively, it is particularly sober, and is in full form.

  • Mark St-John (guitarist of the group of 1984 to 1985 on the album Animalize ) died on April 5th, 2007, following an internal bleeding.

  • It would be following a violent argument between Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley during the recording of " The Elder" that Frehley would have made the decision to leave the group.

  • Always in connection with " The Elder" , Ace Frehley would have pulverized the cassette of demonstration by listening to it, noting that Bob Ezrin, with which already it never got along (preferring Eddie Kramer to him) had amputee on the final model, a majority of the guitar parts of Space Ace.

  • Simmons Gene, professor at the university, would have liked to become musician " for the filles" by seeing with a concert of Beatles the capacity of this medium on the fair sex. The continuation undoubtedly shows that this rumor is rather founded in its case…

  • Paul Stanley made a fall of 6 meters at the time of the round Alive II, of one of the lifting platforms: by chance, it broke only the wrist.

  • Ace Frehley was electrocuted at the time of the concert with Lakeland, in Florida (on December 11th, 1976), it remained 10 minutes inanimate before rejouer, but was sworn not to play never again with a jack connected to the amplifiers: from this day, he always played with a transmitting case.

  • Gene Simmons was put one day fire at the hair (New year' S Eve, 1973 into '74, Academy off music, New York). It is Sean Delaney (the future producer of the album solo of Stanley) who precipitated on Simmons to extinguish his hair in flames using a cover.

  • Peter Criss would have been engaged like beater because, answering an advertisement of Stanley/Simmons, he had answered the question of Simmons favorably “are you thin? ”.

  • Thing seldom reported but verifiable by any fan: one notices on the small pocket of Alive! that Ace Frehley plays of the guitar with its Paul… with back, cords turned towards him. The stereotype is worth the turning for any guitarist.

  • Eric Carr declared in an interview (unfortunately published after its death) that it had done everything to dissuade Stanley/Simmons (and Frehley?) to leave a concept album, hammering to them that the fans wanted a return to the hardware rock' roll pure and hard. The continuation gave him reason, without for all this Simmons/Stanley do not make him any more a place to sing (only two interpretations: Beth , on compilation Smashes Trasches and Hits , and Little Caesar on the album Hot In The Shade (1989). Very beautiful voice however very).

  • In the video game Tony Hawk' S Underground, the level " Hotter than Hell" is a homage to their round Alive IV (to be noted besides that three titles in this concert, " I Was Made For Lovin' You", " God Off Thunder" and " Lick It Up" are available in the band) in Australia, and when the letters forming the name of the group are recovered, the members start a concert.

  • Always in the same play, Gene Simmons is available as a hidden character; among his special figures one notes a grab with the language and a slide on an ignited board.

  • the 7/27/2007, KIS which was to give a special show to US is found with a sick Paul Stanley. It was transported urgently to the hospital one hour before the show. Its heart approached the 200 beats minute. It finally returned at his place a few days more tards without any complication. Result of the races, it is Gene Simmons which ensured all the vocal parts… and was held some that with its own pieces. The group thus occurred in trio for the first time of its long career of more than 35 years already!

The set-list was the following one: 01. Deuce 02. Cold Gin 03. Calling Dr. Love 04. (Long Pause) Christeen Sixteen 05. Nothin' to Lose (W Eric Singer one vocals) 06. I Coil it Loud 07. Goin' Blind 08. Watchin' You 09. She 10. Parasite 11. God off Thunder 12. Let Me Go, Rock'n'roll 'NR Roll 13. Black Diamond (W Eric Singer one vocals) 14. Rock'n'roll All Night

This publicity had like music a remix " I Was Made For Loving You", one of their greater success of before 1980.
