Kōdansha

Kōdansha (講談社, literally: “The company narrator of history”) is the largest publisher of the archipelago Japanese, working in particular literature Manga. Its head office is located at Bunkyo, with Tōkyō.

Kōdansha is especially known in France as editor of manga, publishing the following magazines: Betsu Fure (or Bessatsu friend or Friend), Nakayoshi, Afternoon, Weekly Shōnen Magazine, Monthly Shōnen Magazine, Monthly Shōnen Special Magazine, Seasonal Shōnen Magazine Wonder.

But Kōdansha is also a conventional editor, publishing literary magazines, Gunzō, Gendai and Shūkan Gendai, and books as varied as from the cookbooks, photographs, martial arts, atlases, dictionaries (Nihongo Daijiten)…

History

Kōdansha was created by Seiji Noma in 1909, as a company girl of the Dai-Japanese Yūbenkai (literally, " Large Japanese company of éloquence"). Its first publication was the literary magazine Yūben, " éloquence". The company took its name in 1911, derived from the name of the magazine " Kodan Club" published by the company, at the time of fusion with the Yūbenkai Dai-Japanese. Its legal name is, since 1958, the " Kabushiki-Gaisha Kōdansha". Its slogan is " Omoshirokute tame nor naru" (To be interesting and salutary).

Kōdansha has the Otowa group, which directs subsidiary companies such as King records and Kobunsha, and publishes the Nikkan Gendai, a daily newspaper tabloïd. It has bonds narrow with the Walt Disney Company and belonged to the sponsor official of Tōkyō Disneyland.

It is about the largest editor of Japan, and its annual income to exceed the 200 billion yens (approximately 1.5 billion euros). However, by share the recent Japanese recession and the decline of the industry of the edition, its incomes dropped and the companie knew its first losses since the Second world war in 2002. The second larger editor, Shogakukan, is also it catching up with, Shogakukan having carried out an income of 150 billion yens in 2003 against 165 milliars for Kōdansha. In the past, the difference between the two had exceeded the 50 billion yens.

Kōdansha has been directed for 18 years by Sawako Noma, 4th president goes back to it after Seiji Nomma, Shoichi Nomma and Koremichi Nomma, and grand-daughter of the founder. She is regarded by Fortune as the 31e more powerful businesswoman. She established in particular a subsidiary company in China and created an online service of order of books which are not published any more.

Commercial relations

The company has shares in a panel varied télédiffuseurs through Japan. She would be in particular supposed to hold 20% of the group Tōkyō Broadcasting System. She also holds shares in Farming Japanese Broadcasting, with Kobunsha, Kōdansha having thereafter yielded shares to Fuji TV during a war of tender offer between Livedoor and Fuji TV.

Kōdansha maintains the relations ambiguous with the NHK. Many are the Anime S drawn from the mangas of the company to being diffused on NHK, it diffuses a newspaper compagnion of an emission for child of the NHK, but at the same time, the two companies are frequently found face to face in the newspapers.

Thus, in October 2000, the NHK it continued Kōdansha for an article published by its newspaper Gendai which carried charge on an emission diffused in 1997.
