Küstendorf

Küstendorf (also called “Drvengrad”, the village out of wooden) is a traditional village built by Emir Kusturica for her film the life is a miracle , to 200 km in the south-west of Belgrade in Serbia, near the border with the Bosnia-Herzégovine and of the village of Mokra Gora. Küstendorf is also located close to Višegrad, the town of Bosnia-Herzégovine whose writer Ivo Andrić immortalisé the famous Pont on Drina .

The village gained in 2005 the Prix of architecture Philippe Rotthier for the rebuilding of a city.

The project

Emir Kusturica tells the motivations of this project:

" I lost my city during the war. This is why I wished to build my village. It bears a German name: Küstendorf. I will organize there seminars for people who want to learn how to make cinema, concerts, ceramics, painting. It is the city where I will live and where certain people will be able to come from time to time. There will be of course other inhabitants who will work on the spot. I dream that this place is opened with cultural diversity and sets up against the mondialisation." (July 2004)

A school of cinema and a pole of agro-tourism are thus found there. But it is also a true village with in particular a church, a hotel, a restaurant, shops, and houses for him and its close relations.

The school of cinema

The school of cinema was étrennée during the summer 2005 on the topic " Art is (not) in transition" , directed towards the transition Communism-capitalism in Balkans. The one week training course, dealt with by the realizer in person, accommodated about thirty students realizers come from the whole world, and points of disjunction in the village.

The Eight of Chargan

Küstendorf was also built in order to develop the many kilometers of railways built at the time of the film the life is a miracle .

The way of railroad which carries out to it names " Sarganska osmica" (the Eight of Chargan). It draws its name from the Chargan mount which the engine climbs, in the medium of the forest and the ravines. It does not date from the project, but was built in 1920.

It is the model of this train which Luka, character of the life is a miracle , builds in film. The line was rebuilt in 1999 and is from now on one of curiosities tourist of Serbia.
