History

Where extends today a modern and important city, there was not before 1912 qu' a Kasbah.

Kénitra was created by the Maréchal Lyautey in 1912 at the edge of the river of Sebou as a strong soldier French, port and city. The city was founded under the mode of the French protectorate, established by the treaty signed with Fès the March 30th 1912.

It bore the Arab name of Knitra “small bridge” until in 1932 (it draws its name from a culvert built on the Fouarat wadi upstream of the kasbah; this culvert was destroyed in 1928).

In October 1942, the American troops unloaded there at the time of the Second world war.

During nearly 24 years, it bore the name of Port-Lyautey. In March 1956, when the Morocco became independent, the city will take again its name of origin and will be thus famous Kénitra.
