Kédougou

Kédougou is more the big city of the south-east of the Senegal, near to the borders of the Mali and the Guinea-Bissau.

History

Kédougou was founded by the Diakhanké. Its name means " country of the homme".

The city is the chief town of the Département of Kédougou, in the area of Tambacounda.

The city is on the trunk road N7 and the Fleuve Gambia, in the middle of the hills of the country bassari.

At the time of the censuses of 1988 and 2002, the population amounted respectively to 11.216 and 16.672 inhabitants.

In 2007, according to the official estimates, Kédougou would count 18.860 people.

Economic activities

Today tourism supplements the traditional activities (agriculture, extraction of gold), in particular thanks to the proximity of the cascade of Dindéfelo (100 m) and especially of the National park of Niokolo-Koba, which one often visits at the beginning of Kédougou. One finds there also a military camp, a center of drive of the Peace Corps, an office of the customs for the goods coming from Guinea and of Mali, a Direction of hunting, a dispensary of the catholic Mission, and various small shops, companies, hotels and campings.

Its market is known for its imported fabrics Indigo of Guinea.
