Justin de Nassau

Justin de Nassau (1559 - June 26th 1631) was an illegitimate son of Guillaume I {{er}} of Orange-Nassau says the silent one, first Stathouder of the Plain Provinces.

Biography

The mother of Justin was Eva Elinx, which was perhaps the girl of a burgomaster of Emmerik. It made studies with Leiden.

It was named on February 28th 1585 lieutenant admiral of Zealand. It defended the Zealand during the first part of the Guerre Eighty Year old and blocked with its ships the Flemish coast in 1588. It was also shown on the ground with Breda in 1590, or with the seat of Steenwijk in 1592.

Between 1589 and 1600 it was several times sent as ambassador near the king Henri IV of France. It had to ensure defenses of Nieuport against Ambrogio Spinola. May 29th 1601, it accepted a pension for the rendered services. It was named governor of Breda (very important station at the time) on December 28th 1601. It had to defend the city besieged by Spinola in 1624.

It awaited a long time the promised reinforcements of his Frederic-Henri half-brothers and Maurice de Nassau, which could not force the seat, and had to capitulate in August 1625. The scene was represented by Velasquez in its famous table of the Rendering of Breda .

It was withdrawn in Leiden, where it died on June 26th 1631. It left two wire (Guillaume Henri and Philippe) and a girl (Lenore Henriette).
