Justin Catayée

Justin Catayée was a Politician French, and hero of the Second world war, born with Cayenne the May 30th 1916. He dies the June 22nd 1962 in an air crash landing with Point-with-Clown.

He engages with Pau in 1941, at the time of the declaration of the Second world war. Deserting the Army from Africa, it engages in the free French Forces in June 1943. For its courage it is rewarded several times: Military Cross, Military Cross with gold star, colonial Medal, Military decoration.

He becomes mathematics professor with the college Felix Eboué after having obtained a license of science at the University of Bordeaux. He adheres to the Guianese section SFIO (French Section of the International Worker) and becomes city council man in 1953. Disappointed by the lack of ambition of his comrades it founds the Guianese Socialist party and the newspaper " Upright Guyane" in which it propagates its ideas.

The year 1958 is synonymous with electoral campaign for Justin Catayée. This year there, Charles de Gaulle prepared the Référendum for the news Constitution following the Crise of May 1958. This last sent André Malraux in the Overseas department in order to make the countryside of Yes. Initially favorable to Not, Justin Catayée finishes, after his interviews with André Malraux, by inviting to vote for Yes. That confers to him at the time a local political stature approved at the national level.

After the success and the establishment of the news Constitution, it decides to present to the legislative election November 30th 1958, it carries it with the second turn and becomes appointed of Guyana.

Supported by the F.D.G. (Guianese Democratic Face) it flies away for Paris at the beginning of June 1962 in order to present and to claim with the parliamentary session a special statute of autonomy of management for the Guyana. He is alerted in full meeting by the terrible repression ordered by the Préfet Erignac following the manifestation of the F.D.G. against the establishment of the Foreign legion in Guyana. He then decides to curtail his presence with the session and to return in Guyana to ravel with his comrades of the F.D.G. the June 25th.

Unfortunately the plane which brings back it towards the Guyana crushes the June 22nd in the North-East of Point-with-Clown on a hill. Its death plunges the Guyana in a great distress. At the conclusion of the commemorative evening which honors death with Justin Catayéé to the Palate of Reciprocity with Paris the July 6th 1962, a wish is expressed: that to see one of the streets of the municipality of Cayenne bearing its name. Thus with Cayenne, the street Voltaire was famous street Justin Catayée. It is in this street that with number 32 the first seat of the Guianese Socialist party was.
