Juris Hartmanis
Juris Hartmanis (born the July 7th 1928 with Rīga in Latvia), is a Latvian Informaticien. With Richard Stearns, it received in 1993 the Prix Turing for their common work. Their research led to the birth of the Théorie of complexity of the algorithms.
Born in Latvia, he initially emigrated in Germany after the Second world war. He obtained a license in physics of the University of Marbourg. Then it left to the the United States of America and obtained its control in mathematics applied to the university of Kansas City (now known under the name of Université of Missouri-Kansas). It obtained its doctorate in mathematics of the California Institute off Technology (Caltech). Then, he worked within the research laboratory of General Electric Company, developing and presenting data-processing principles. In 1965, he became professor with the Université of Cornell, where he helped to create the department of data processing and was the first president.
