Jurat

It is in the beginning a word Provençal borrowed of Latin juratus , " who lent serment".

A Jurat is, in certain cities in particular south of the France, a municipal magistrate having lent oath. Thus with Bordeaux since 1206, the city obtains municipal institutions, one speaks about the Jurats of Bordeaux (they are the Consul S or Échevin S of the other communes). Jurats elect a mayor, Michel de Montaigne is certainly most famous of them.

It is also a name sometimes given to the elected administrators of a corporation or of a trade association, one employs also the word " Juré".
