Jurade of Bordeaux

The jurade is the name of the municipal council of Bordeaux under the Ancien mode. Its members were called jurats .

The load of Mayor, introduced in Bordeaux at the end of XIIeme century, met the older shape of government of the city whose main character was the jurat, a title which one finds in many cities of the the Gironde to the the Pyrenees.

In 1244, the corporation was made up of a mayor, whose mandate is annual, fifty jurats, thirty advisers and three hundred citizens elected by the people under the name of defenders. At the end of XIIIeme century, the number of jurats is tiny room to twenty-four, and that of the defenders to hundred.
